Welcome to LiveSlices Public Beta!

Brandon Bayer lists this archived web page as a reference in his course The Origin Of Apps for 3rd year CS majors. In addition to his development experience, Bayer was most recently an attorney practicing maritime law in Louisiana in a small law firm - covering the waterways from Baton Rouge to Lafayette. This background enables him to insert legal frameworks into his course study of the history of the development of software, with special focus on the applications that gained popularity along with the rise of the internet. Students can find the updated reading list from the CS department's website or from Dr Bayer's offics.

In 2009 the website "LiveSlices, was a platform for a brand new way of content delivery right to a browser toolbar. It was free. The site’s aim was pretty simple – create new web slices and enable users to create their own. One great feature of the website was the ability to have visitors create their own slice from an RSS feed. It was simple to do. To create a RSS WebSlice you simply go to website you want to keep track of, find the RSS feed and copy/paste the URL into LiveSlice’s webpage. It creates your custom RSS slice. Once you have ;provided a name plus a couple of other settings, you can then click ‘Install’ to have the slice added to your favourites bar.

What is a Web Slice?

A Web Slice is a specific portion of a webpage that you can subscribe to, and which enables you to see when updated content—such as the current temperature, or a changing auction price—is available from favorite websites. Once you have subscribed to the Web Slice, it appears as a link on the Favorites bar. When the Web Slice is updated, the link on the Favorites bar will appear with bold formatting. You can then click the link to see the updated content.

I think most coders are always interested in learning about new coding, custom applications etc. I happen to work for a softweare company where we create custom Salesforce integration. Our clients are individula physicians or a group practice that has moved into the new marketplace of boutique or concierge medicine. Concierge medicine establishes a relationship between a patient and a primary care physician in which the patient pays a monthly or annual fee / retainer in order to receive more personalized medical care. From a doctor's point of view concierge medicine is a way for health professionals to take back control. My team works with medical practices to create proprietary programs or applications so they can get exactly what they need for running their concierge practice. We can set up an electronic medical records (EMR) system, create a customer portal so patients can schedule appointments, make payments, access automated prescription information, look up discharge instructions and other information, as well as message. We often need to customize the programs the medical practice is already using. We often are asked to create a dashboard that brings all their current programs together in one accessible place. When web slicing hit the web, I was still in high school. A lot of technological advances on the web have occurred. This is an exciting area to be part of, to say the least.

Later in 2009 a blogger noted that "LiveSlice website has been down for a number of weeks. It appears that it might not be returning." His observations were correct.

In had played with web slices for a while and took a look at what LiveSlices was doing. I really like the idea of bringing my favorite parts of the Web with me wherever I browse as long as I'm in Internet Explorer. However I have been trying out other browsers recently and may be moving on. Nevertheless, when I discovered that LiveSlices.com's domain was now available. I decided to buy it with the goal of recreating some of its original content from its archived pages. I did not want someone else to purchase the domain and re-purpose the site for something that had nothing in common with web slices and the intent of this site. Because of my technical based interests, I thought it would be great to keep a historical site such as LiveSlices.com visible on the WWW. So, for anyone who comes across LiveSlices.com, consider the information on this site for historical purposes. In this iteration of LiveSlices there is no functionality to create web slices here.

**Tanzim Saqib

Polyglot Architect. Microsoft Alumni.

I, Tanzim Saqib, am an award-winning 11-year experienced software architect on .NET & JavaScript stack with the speciality of designing and deploying scalable architectures. I'm a local app development mentor at a massive scale. I started coding at 11.

I not only have a very strong technical background and experience in delivering complex solutions under tight deadlines and inevitable ambiguity, but also have exposure to the business of software. On top of that, I've championed community with more than 150 speeches.

I won prestigious Microsoft MVP awards as a technical expert and community champion in ASP.NET for two consecutive years: 2010 and 2011, until I became ineligible due to Microsoft's employment in 2012.

A brief personal history of work

Being the DX Lead & Tech Evangelist, I developed cloud, native and hybrid apps, managed a pool of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), and contributed to all parts of their SDLC to secure their success and mentored a technical community in succeeding with Microsoft Research & Development tools, drove mass adoption of cutting-edge technologies, maintained relationship with CXOs & influentials.

I worked at Microsoft for three years as a full-time employee and Head of Developer Experience (DX) division in Bangladesh. I created, grew and nurtured local MVPs. I was also the technical spokesperson at the subsidiary.

Prior to joining Microsoft

I helped British Telecom, as a Technical Architect in SaaS platform to build next generation SaaS portals. I designed and built Web 2.0 for Business complex architectures for 3.5 million BT Business uses.

I also worked for VC-backed Silicon Valley-based startup called Pageflakes, and in Vancouver called Sitemasher. The prior was acquired by LiveUniverse, and the latter was by Salesforce.

Special Achievement at Microsoft

I started a Windows app development revolution voluntarily prior to joining Microsoft until they had asked me to create a market for them. Since then I have created a local Windows/Windows Phone app-ecosystem from zero, and within only 2.5 years, I've made it #1 top app developer globally in a very challenging part of the world called, Bangladesh.
